I’ll get to coach in just a sec… First, have you read the recent article “The Path to PM Mastery” on Gantthead? It acknowledges that there are differences – major ones – among all of us folks that are PMs in one way or another. I hate to rate myself according to the PM mastery hierarchy specified – I’m afraid I might embarrass myself – but I will say that I see elements in myself up and down the scale…but not all clearly at one point. The PMI virtual community project is a major initiative aimed at bringing together the many different facets of the overall PMI members. I am not sure whether non-members will gain access, but I understand that there is a membership fee to get into this virtual community. I have some thoughts, or more to the point, questions as my curiosity about this has been piqued. Let’s take a look.

Many people who consider getting into the project management profession are also considering other options, such as earning a degree perhaps in project management. There are also certificate programs where students earn a certificate in project management. The options for programs like this are many. Earning a certificate could include going to school full time, night school, or various online courses. Another option is simply to take some kind of training in the classroom, or online, or maybe in independent study groups, or some combination of those, and simply earn a certification like the PMP Certification.

There are many posts in the forums and blogs on the topic of whether it is better to go for a PMP or MBA. I think there is great value in both, but I think they serve 2 different purposes. There is an interesting aspect to the relationship between processes and projects. Where processes are what keep a business flowing on a day to day basis, projects are what puts new processes in place, re-shapes existing processes, or replaces a process. Processes have lifecycle; most processes have a finite life. Thus projects have a very definite place in the lifecycle of processes.
